I read an article a while ago about a guy (I think in Austin) who invented dynamic billboards where you could purchase space online and upload your ad. It looks like Google is up to something similar or maybe they bought out that I guy I am thinking of. Either way this could be a great opportunity for local businesses to get in the billboard game if this thing grows into a legit service.
Update: Just found the article and of course the awesome Bill Slawski has come through once again. Check out this electronic internet billboard patent review by Bill

A company here in Utah has been doing the digital billboard thing for four or five years (see http://www.redoutdoor.com/). Last I checked you could buy adspace for as little as $250. But they’re not that good as far as visibility goes. You can barely read anything on them.
