Simple Link Building Tip for Web Designers

February 10th, 2007 · 4 Comments

Link reclamation is usually the first tactic I employ in a link building campaign for a client. Link reclamation is simply taking some existing links (or near links like mentions) and making them work a little harder for you. Typically web designers place a “credit line” on the bottom of every website they create. This is for the most part an acceptable practice and pretty commonplace. My tip to those that do use the credit line(or a credit anywhere else on the site) is to at least use keywords in your link. Here are some examples

Designed by Phases Studio graphic designers in Denver
Another White Ink Creation, a web design firm in Boulder

You get the idea.

Now don’t go running out and changing all your credit lines to the exact same thing. In fact don’t even worry about changing them all at once. Come up with a few variations and then slowly make some changes. You might be pleasantly surprised by the results.

This is also one of the first things I do for a client. But I approach it like this: If some site is mentioning you without a link, ask them nicely if they could link to you. If some site is linking to you with “click here” or something like this, ask them nicely if they could use anchor text instead. Always let them know that you appreciated the fact that they are mentioing you or linking to you in the first place. Be super, super nice because in the end they’re just doing you a favor out of the kindness of their own heart.

Use a tool like: http://www.webuildpages.com/neat-o/ to find out how people are linking to you. Look for bad anchor text (such as just the URL) that you could reclaim and make work for you harder.

Here’s tip: Gues what THIS query tells you on MSN?

Hey found your site kinda by accident.
Glad I did - very nice!
    I’ll certainly stop back in!

Another thing I’ve been thinking of is wordpress plugins. A good plugin can have a nice viral effect on traffic. :) … now I just have to come up with one. :)
